What is the APOE Gene?

The APOE gene provides instructions for making
apolipoprotein E, a protein that plays an important role in brain health by helping clear amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques from around nerve cells. These plaques are a recognized feature associated with Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline.

There are three common versions, or alleles, of the APOE
gene: E2, E3, and E4. The E3 allele is the most common in the general population. The E2 allele is considered protective, as it is more effective at clearing amyloid beta plaques. The E4 allele is associated with reduced plaque clearance and an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
